Brain Food

Now you know I just found out about the following Brain Foods while watching a segment of Impact Theory, hosted by Tom Bilyeu and his guest Jim Kwik. Fascinating would be a gross understatement. I love learning!   JIM KWIK

Brain Foods  You, your brain,  your memory.

Avocadosavocadohigh fat content, it’s important to note that these green powerhouses are packed with monosaturated fats or the “good” kind, keeping blood sugar levels steady and your skin glowing.

Blueberries blueberries-894839_960_720it’s one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods known to man, including vitamin C and vitamin K and fiber. Because of their high levels of gallic acid, blueberries are especially good at protecting our brains from degeneration and stress.

Broccoli broccoli

It’s one of the best brain foods out there. Thanks to its high levels of vitamin K and choline, it will help keep your memory sharp.

It’s also loaded with vitamin C — in fact, just one cup provides you with 150 percent of your recommended daily intake. Its high-fiber levels mean that you’ll feel full quickly.

Coconut Oilcoconut-oil there’s almost nothing that coconut oil can’t help.

And when it comes to your brain, it’s full of benefits, too. Coconut oil works as a natural anti-inflammatory, suppressing cells responsible for inflammation. It can help with memory loss as you age and destroy bad bacteria that hangs out in your gut

Eggseggs-realistic_vector_eggs_154680Yolks contain large amounts of choline, which helps in fetal brain development for pregnant women. It also breaks down bethane, a chemical that produces hormones related to happiness. That’s right, eggs can make you happy!

Kale. Leafy Green VegetableskaleGreen, leafy vegetables are also loaded with vitamins A and K (just one cup of kale has more than 684 percent of your recommended daily serving!), which help fight inflammation and keep bones strong.

Salmon packedsalmon-brain-food with omega-3 fatty acids to help keep your brain running smoothly — goodbye, brain fog — and improve memory.

If you have kids, feeding them salmon can help prevent ADHD by improving their focus. And these same fatty acids can also help prevent cancer and kill tumors — not bad for a four-ounce serving of fish!

TurmericturmericTurmeric also helps boost antioxidant levels and keep your immune system healthy, while also improving your brain’s oxygen intake, keeping you alert and able to process information.

WalnutswalnutsTheir high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals also improve mental alertness. The vitamin E in the nuts can also help ward off Alzheimer’s.

Chocolatechocolate at least 70 percent of cocoa. This ensures you’ll get your choco-fix and its brain benefits! Dark chocolate can actually be good for you! Chocolate is chockfull of flavonols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They can also help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to both the brain and heart.

“When Great Trees Fall

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
gnaws on kind words
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.”

Stuck In Your Project?

Do you ever get in a stuck place with your writing or creative project? I have and I know it is a natural part of the creative process. Yes, it can be uncomfortable, but I believe honoring our process supports the actual work and makes for a better final product. I have experienced this at work in both my visual and my written art. Getting stuck usually shows up when I don’t like something when something feels off or missing. When I was writing The Curious Magic of Buckeye Groves. I got stuck after writing thirty pages. At that point, I was bored with the story – something was missing and I was unclear what it was, therefore I began feeling completely uninspired. I actually set the project aside and started working on another story. Eventually, a solution spontaneously arose and I was re-inspired and started working on it again, this time completely in the flow. I spoke with another author about this and she told me she often used the same tactic. I have heard of people who set aside a story for years before coming back to it. I think the key is letting go – a form of non-attachment which creates space for solutions to arise from our subconscious. Sometimes pushing too hard can get in the way.

There have been other times when I pushed myself through my resistance. Sometimes resistance is just resistance. Listening to music helps and so do walks in nature or sitting with trees. Creation is a very intuitive process and it is important to be attuned to the messages that come through and to trust myself.

Creative projects can be much like giving birth, there are moments when we breathe and moments when we push. If you haven’t finished projects in the past, that is not a prescription for what will happen with your next one. The past is not a predictor of the future. Examine your beliefs about finishing projects and look at any limits you are putting on yourself. You may be pressuring yourself in ways that are not helpful.

Stuck in your project?  Here is a variety of tips for approaching and/or overcoming the block:

  • Don’t judge your block. Get curious about it. Visualize – how does that block show up in your body? Can you find a metaphor to describe it?  What does the metaphor say about your block? This can be a powerful way to get under the surface to understand what is really going on.
  • Re-examine your commitment and purpose. What was your original motive for this project? Is that still true? What is important to you about this project now?
  • Examine your output goals? Are you beating yourself up over unrealistic goals? Our inner critics tend to get in our way and de-motivate us.
  • Take a break and work on something else for a while
  • Try pushing through your resistance for ½ hour.  Did your engagement with the project change?
  • What is a good source of inspiration for you? Music? Walks? Dance? Take some time to nourish your muse and then try writing again.

Of course, you can always contact me and we can set up a session to explore your project idea, uncover your blocks and get you started or working again.

The Curious Magic of Buckeye Groves

In many ways, this story is a distillation of things that are important to me and includes some of my experiences. As a writer, I find that how I engage with my art is an ongoing exploration. The physical completion of a work of art is not a completion of how it impacts the psyche. It’s always interesting to go back to earlier works. They help us understand who we are as artists and human beings. This is another great reason for you to complete your project.

I also find inspiration in the work of other artists. I would love to know how my book impacted you.

I was 5 years old, my Mother GLADYS MARIE YELL WILSON died of Leukemia. She was 39. My sisters who were 3 months old, 7 & 18 years old began our lives as motherless daughters. At 19, my Sister, LINDA CAROL GREEN JOHNSON found out that she had Melanoma in her right shoulder. By the Grace of God, the operation was a success and Linda is cancer-free after 48 years. 1972 we lost my oldest Sister, JACQUELINE LOUISE CRAIG PROCTOR, she was 34. She left behind 4 children; age range was 12, 11,10,9 years of age (two boys and two girls) and husband and of course us, her three sisters. Well, I wish I could tell you that is the end but it’s not. COURTNEY SUZANNE PROCTOR was an “angel-eyed” beauty at 9 months when cancer began to weaken her attempt to stand/walk, normal at that age. Cancer stole her life before her 1st birthday. COURTNEY was my Grandniece. Cancer has taken enough from me and I know I’m not alone.

Good night, sleep tight and don’t let the BED BUGS BITE!

Good night, sleep tight and don’t let the BED BUGS BITE!

Fifty-five years ago in Texas, this was a customary, “Goodnight ritual.” I was thinking, “who cares, just don’t let a rattlesnake share my bed.”  TEXAS SNAKES No joke. Often after leaving our home for weeks, as my Mom was receiving treatment for Leukemia, it was common knowledge that snakes migrate into homes that were left unoccupied.
I always thought bed bugs were similar to a unicorn. They really didn’t exist. “Oh, quite contraire my dear.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, Bed Bugs are about the size of an apple seed. They hide in the cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards, bed frames and any other objects around a bed. The risk of encountering bedbugs increases if you spend time in places with high turnovers of nighttime guests — such as hotels, hospitals or homeless shelters.
Now as luck would have it, guess who’s my neighbor? No, not Mr. Rodgers.CastlePest HOME PICTURE

Believe-or-not, “Bed Bug Services” are actually explained in vivid detail.
Bed bugs are accomplished travelers, stowing away in suitcases and personal belongings. They are small wingless insects that are becoming more and more of a problem across the U.S. as well as in the Stanislaus County area. They have become a major problem in hotels, apartment buildings, hospitals and homes. Since they are prolific breeders, once you have a small infestation, it can grow very quickly into a severe problem. Bed bugs hide away in mattresses and box springs and the crevices of all types of furniture during the day time and come out during the night to feed on human blood and the blood of other warm blooded mammals. Bed bugs are very difficult to get rid of and early detection is key.CASTLE ant
As Les Brown, one of the world’s most renowned motivational speakers, would say: “What you don’t know can kill you.”CASTLE PEST bedbug

Ok, maybe a Bed Bug Bite won’t kill you but I’m not going to sign-up for that experiment. Instead, I will consider the professionals at Castle Pest Management offer: A Customized residential and commercial bed bug services can help you rid your property of these nighttime pests. We use both fumigation and heat treatments to exterminate your bed bug problem as well as conventional bed bug control methods to make sure bed bugs are gone from your home or business for good.

McGrath & Associates’ $2,495 full-service flat-fee program

House 1McGrath & Associates’ $2,495
full-service flat-fee program continues to provide smart home sellers with an affordable

1965 Taramea Lane Ceres

Mr. Jones of 1965 Taramea Lane, Ceres, sold his property for $17,000 over the asking price and
saved thousands off traditional real estate commissions using McGrath & Associates $2,495 flat-fee,
full-service program. Guaranteed savings.

According to Dr. Rick McGrath, Ph.D., Realtor broker-owner, technology has revolutionized the cost of selling your property. Now, it is possible for home sellers to save thousands of dollars using an affordable and much more sensible full-service $2,495 flat-fee program that saves thousands of dollars off traditional real estate commissions.

hand complete puzzle home as concept

Rick McGrath will solved your “Home Seller” puzzle

Home sellers traditionally depend on Realtors to list their homes for a hefty commission because they control access to the MLS. Now, thanks to growing technology, the Internet has developed platforms open to public viewing. Now, every prospective home-buyer, every investor and every real estate agent gets instant notification of properties listed.

Technology has changed the way we book our vacations, hotels and airline tickets.

“The future of selling real estate is no different and that future is here,” says McGrath. “For years, large brick and mortar real estate firms have enjoyed making their fortunes off the hard-earned equity of home-owners. They want you to believe that you need to pay huge commissions to get the exposure you need and negotiate for top dollar.

Gold Key With Welcome Home Text As Symbol For Property And Ownership

Gold Key With Welcome Home According to Rick McGrath

“That is nothing further from the truth. Once your listing is submitted to the MLS and our syndicated website, every licensed agent, prospective buyer and investor will see it. In today’s Internet world, the size of the real estate company doesn’t matter. The only question is how much will it cost for the same results? You can pay 6 percent, 5 percent, or even 4 percent, but why? There is no sense in paying so much when there is a more affordable alternative available.

“The current real estate market is on fire and often properties sell within a few days, many getting multiple offers. Sellers now have an opportunity to cash in on their hard-earned equity and save thousands of dollars using our $2,495 flat-fee pro-gram,” says McGrath.

“Home sellers routinely wonder, ‘Why do I have to pay twice as much as the person who has a $100,000 home? They pay $6,000 but because I have a $200,000 property, Realtors want to charge me $12,000. Realtors spend the same amount of time on both properties.’ We believe these home sellers have a valid concern,” says McGrath. There is no reason for home sellers to have to pay more than they should.

Coins Around House Shows Home Savings Or Construction Business

For anyone thinking of selling, it’s important to price you property within market value.

“The typical real estate agent spends approximately six hours, start to finish, with each home seller or buyer,” McGrath says.

“When you put that into perspective based on an hourly rate, we can understand why home sellers feel like they’re being taken advantage of. There are hundreds of homeowners who would like to sell and move but they just don’t have enough equity, especially when they have to pay such high commission rates to sell their property.”

Each month dozens of proper-ties go unsold because homeowners have to list well above market value, hoping to cover the costs needed to move and pay the real estate agent. This is why McGrath & Associates has taken technology to the next level by developing its full-service, flat-fee program for an affordable $2,495.

“This isn’t a For Sale by Owner or discount program. Though we do offer a For Sale By Owner program for $1,495,” says McGrath. “Unlike other real estate companies, we are committed to giving each home seller everyday advertising in the Modesto Bee until the property is sold. Each property is listed on our syndicated Web site that publishes to,,,,

Yahoo, Google real estate and

many others.

McGrath & Associates cooper-ate with other real estate compa-nies as often as possible, listing properties on the local MLS for as little as 2 percent commission. This provides even more expo-sure and ensures home sellers get the most for their property. When we bring the buyer, the seller only pays a $2,495 flat-fee plus ordinary seller closing costs associated with selling property.

“We handle all the negotiations to make sure our clients get top dollar and handle all the required paperwork and duties common to Realtors from start to finish, McGrath says. “Everyone pays the same amount.”

These home sellers will save thousands:

A 3804 Argonaut, Modesto, saved thousands off traditional commissions.3804 Argonaut Modesto Pool

A 1615 Flower Garden, Ceres, saved thousands off traditional commissions.1615 Flower Garden Ct Ceres, CA

A 242 Scarlet, Patterson, saved thousands off traditional commissions.242 Scarlet Patterson CA balcony view

For those who have tried to sell in the past 12 months and beyond, properties may have gone unsold because the asking

price was in excess of market value.

“This is the perfect program that just might make all the difference in the world. The market is very hot right now and proper-ties are selling for top dollar,” says McGrath.

For anyone thinking of selling, it’s important to price your property within market value.

“Overpricing your property will cause you to miss out on the ‘newness’ that occurs within the first few weeks properties come on the market. Buyers tend to look at what is just listed and forget what is still left on the market, chasing the next ‘just listed’ property,” says McGrath. “If you’re looking for an easier way to sell your home and save thousands of dollars, then it’s time to put our plan to work.”

Dozens of home sellers saved thousands of dollars in 2014 using McGrath’s services.

Hate Vegetables – Love Chopped Salad

Hate Vegetables – Love Chopped  Salad Chopped Salad 3

Under no circumstances, what-so-ever, would I intentionally eat 90% of the ingredients in this salad.
Lettuce, tomatoes, provolone cheese, Genoa salami, and artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, green peppers, zucchini, and pitted black olives, pepperoncini, broccoli, banana peppers, carrots, cucumbers.
I must confess, I love, love, love most Chopped Salads.
I know I haven’t been known to eat vegetables. I also know that adding fresh greens to my diet can reduce my risk of cancer.
Low-Energy-Density Vegetables    Style Chopped Salad
Eating foods that are low in energy density — or calories per gram — helps you feel full even when you eat fewer calories, making it easier to lose weight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vegetables in general tend to be low in energy density, but non-starchy vegetables are lower in energy density than starchy vegetables. Fill half of your plate at each meal with these vegetables, which include salad greens, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, turnips, radishes, celery, peppers, eggplant, beets, artichokes and cabbage.

Italian Chopped Salad
Change can be good and taste good, too.
So the next time you think vegetables, think Chopped Salad.
Try it you just may like it.

“9 things I know today that I didn’t know yesterday”

2013-04-03 12.15.35-2

This picture above says a lot. There is much for me to learn.

“9 things I know today that I didn’t know yesterday”

1) At any given time, about one-half of the planets are covered by clouds.

2) Cairo, Egypt, is by far the largest city in the Middle East, with over 10 million people.

3) In 1858, John Hanning Speke, while traveling on his own, discovered La Victoria and claimed it to be the source of the Nile River. Many did not believe him. Speke returned to the lake in 1860 and proved Lake Victoria was indeed the source of the Nile River.
4) Arkansas is the only state with a diamond mine. Located in the southwestern Arkansas, the mine is no longer in commercial production but is now a park, Crater of Diamonds State Park, which allows visitors to take any diamonds they find.
5) The world’s first monument to an insect was dedicated and established in Enterprise, Alabama, on December 11, 1919 of a boll weevil.

6) Harvard University is the oldest college or university in the United States. It was founded in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.2013-04-10 11.18.37

7) We have leap years to keep the calendar accurate with respect to the solar years. It takes the Earth 365 days, 5 hours, and 48 minutes, and 46 seconds—just under 365.25 days—to revolve around the sun. If there were no leap years, every 56 years the calendar would be two weeks behind. By adding one extra day every four years, the calendar stays accurate. (All this time, I thought it was about, the woman asking the man to marry her. duh)

8) Dum Dum International Airport is in Calcutta, India.

9) Gambia follows 200 miles of the Gambia River; it is a very thin county, averaging only 12 miles in width. Gambia is entirely within the West African country of Senegal.

10) Kunta Kinte was from Gambia. Kunta Kinte, the protagonist of Alex Haley’s novel Roots.
